Hot New Sunflowers to Grow

By Yvonne Cunnington In recent years, sunflowers have come into their own as cutting flowers. There are many exciting new cultivars in a variety of shapes - from standard ray flowers to pompoms or fuzzy disks. The plant sizes too range from dwarf to giant. As for colors, these too go well beyond the standard sunny yellow into white, lemon, bicolors, and even dusky burgundy. Cut sunflowers are expensive to buy, so if you have the space, it’s well worth the effort to grow your own. Unique sunflower cultivars to grow: Many of the newer sunflower cultivars are pollenless, which makes them perfect for cutting and bringing into the house. Here are some of my favorites: ‘Ring of Fire’: An AAS (All-America-Selections) winner with striking 5-inch wide pollenless flowers; bi-coloured petals in dark red around a chocolate brown center taper off to golden yellow tips. Grows 4 to 5 feet tall; late-blooming. Sunflower ‘Claret’: An excellent cutting sunflower that keeps its intense velvet burgundy color in the summer sun. Main stem grows 6 feet tall; produces side-shoots with lots of blooms. ‘Eversun’: A deep yellow, early-blooming pollenless type with big 10- to 12-inch ray flowers around a dark brown disk; flowers produced on one main stem. Sunflower ‘Teddy Bear’: I’m generally not a fan of overbred flowers, but I’ve fallen in love with the sheer zaniness of this one. Has soft, fluffy, pompom heads that make handsome cut flowers; 2 to 3 feet tall with lots of flowers per plant. A perfect plant for a children’s garden (and anyone who is young at heart). Does well in containers too. ‘Giant Sungold’ Sunflower: At 5 feet in height with lots of flower-bearing branches, this is a taller version of ‘Teddy Bear’. Eucalyptus Essential Oil in Aromatherapy

By Lisa Barger Of the more than 600 species of eucalyptus currently identified, fewer than 4% are farmed for herbal or aromatherapy uses. The 3 species readily available in the US are Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus radiata and Eucalyptus citriadora. Eucalyptus is distilled from leaves that are either freshly picked or slightly dried. Traditional Herbal Uses Perhaps eucalyptus is best known as a nasal decongestant. Adding eucalyptus to hot water then inhaling the steam is a folk remedy that goes back millennia. But eucalyptus is actually used extensively in herbal medicine for other purposes as well. Herbalists claim that eucalyptus is a potent insect repellent and several aromatherapy books offer specific formulas for homemade mosquito sprays. Eucalyptus (properly diluted in a carrier) is sometimes prescribed as a liniment. Additionally, it is sometimes recommended in cases of minor burns and blisters as well as small wound care. Some studies have suggested that eucalyptus is a potent anti-microbial but others have shown little to to anti-microbial activity. (Remember, most aromatherapy books are “crafting” books that simply re-phrase other authors’ material. Before you rely on any essential oil for its alleged therapeutic effects check with a reliable science-based source.) In Chinese medicine, eucalyptus is used to move lunch Qi and is considered a remedy for wind-heat. Aromatherapy Uses Eucalyptus has an extremely “medicinal” scent and perhaps that’s why it’s often prescribed for use in sick rooms. It imparts a moist, cooling sensation to nose. Eucalyptus is used by aromatherapists to revitalize and energize. It’s also used to “clear” a room and is often diffused in a home to cleanse the building of a previous family’s energy. Blending With Other Essential Oils Eucalyptus has a biting medicinal scent that is usually used as a single-note oil due to its ability to overpower other essential oils. In very small amounts it can sharpen the scent of woody oils like cedar or fir; it is also frequently added to lavender or tea tee. Eucalyptus is considered a top-note. Safety & Warnings Though legally defined as a poison in some countries, eucalyptus is generally (though not without controversy) considered safe when used topically or diffused for aromatherapy. Conscious Mating: Is This the Right Relationship for Me?

By David Steele Prior to making a commitment in a relationship, or in the “pre-commitment” stage, is your opportunity to choose your future as consciously as possible. YOU ARE A PIONEER You are the pioneer of your life. And if you are reading this you are most likely seeking to be the pioneer of your relationships by striving to break free of past patterns and make conscious relationship choices. As a relationship pioneer your goal is to be fully aware of the long-term impact of your choices and date and mate with conscious intention. You are determined to create the life and relationship you really want and believe that true love and fulfillment will happen only if you go after what you really want and dont settle for less. Everyone begins their journey towards a successful and fulfilling committed life partnership as a single. When you date and finally find someone to bond with in a relationship it’s very exciting, but at the same time, most are conscious of the question “Is this the right relationship for me?” and are in what I call the “Pre-commitment Stage” of a relationship. The journey from single to becoming a conscious couple in a successful, fulfilling committed life partnership I call “Conscious Mating.” Just as a conscious single must have clarity about who you are, what you want, and how to get it, so must a conscious couple. As challenging as it is for you to make good long term relationship choices when youre single, it can be even more challenging to make good long-term relationship choices when in a pre-committed relationship. WHAT IS PRE-COMMITMENT? When singles become couples in today’s world, most are wondering at some level “Is this ‘The One’? Should I be with this person for the rest of my life?” They are an exclusive couple, but not yet committed. It may be tempting to call these couples “pre-marital” as a catch-all term to include all couples that haven’t yet taken the step of becoming committed. However, in our opinion, the mindset of a pre-marital couple is “We want to be married,” which is very different from the pre-commitment mindset of “Is this the right relationship for me?” When I first identified the pre-commitment stage and started developing some approaches to working with these couples, I recognized this stage as different than “pre-marital” but didn’t know what to call it. The label “pre-commitment” was intended to be temporary, but it stuck. I was amazed at the lack of recognition, information, and resources for this stage of relationship among mainstream relationship experts and the available research and literature. Even today, while this phenomenon has become common practice in our culture it is still largely unrecognized in the mainstream, which I hope to change with articles such as this one. TWO TYPES OF PRE-COMMITMENT Pre-committed couples generally fall into two categories- UNCONSCIOUS- typically following the “mini-marriage” model of trying the relationship out, acting committed without actually making the commitment. A disconnect of fact and attitude. CONSCIOUS- aware that they are not yet committed, usually have commitment as a goal, asking themselves “Is this the right relationship for me? Should I make a commitment?” An alignment of fact and attitude. ROMANTIC LOVE AND PRE-COMMITMENT There are many misconceptions about love. Our culture glorifies the romantic love stage of relationship in literature, theatre, television, and movies. It is that initial infatuation stage of a relationship when our chemistry is in high gear and we experience euphoria. Powerful amphetamine-like neurotransmitters flood and alter our brain chemistry. While unsustainable, the romantic love stage serves an important purpose because it gives us a taste of our best and most powerful selves. If the relationship turns out to be a good long-term choice, this stage bonds us together and prepares us to weather lifes inevitable storms. Confusing this initial romantic stage with real, sustainable love is a mistake that can be our undoing. We want and expect to be happy, and romantic love is eternally optimistic. We dont want to believe that when we experience this intense chemistry with someone that it wont work. We want to avoid the pain of failure and can be tempted to try hard to fit a round peg into a square hole, twisting ourselves into a pretzel trying to make a relationship work. In todays world when singles become couples, few jump blindly into immediate commitment. Most new couples are pre-committed, meaning they are an exclusive couple, but they havent yet decided the future of their relationship. This stage coincides with romantic love, and conscious couples who understand relationships realize the need to get to know one another long enough for the infatuation to wear off and experience the reality before making irreversible long-term choices. CONSCIOUS MATING A RADICAL POSITION Here is the radical truth: Relationships do break up. As hard as we might try to prevent and avoid relationship failure, it happens anyway. Because there are many unconscious forces at work in every stage of a relationship, being fully aware isnt easy and controlling the outcome is impossible.. These unconscious forces have the potential for undermining our best efforts to sustain love if we are not aware. In Conscious Mating, rather than unconsciously believing romantic fantasies of living happily ever after, we accept this truth. Since relationships break up anyway, why not be as conscious as possible in the process and increase our odds of success? CHOOSING YOUR RELATIONSHIP CHALLENGES Every relationship has challenges. This is normal and does not mean there is something inherently wrong with your relationship. Some challenges are solvable and can be addressed and resolved, others are perpetually unsolvable. Prior to making a commitment in a relationship, or in the “pre-commitment” stage, is your opportunity to choose your future as objectively as possible. You can use the pre-commitment stage of a relationship to identify the solvable challenges and unsolvable problems in this relationship. You can then make a conscious choice to take them on and live with them, or decide that they sabotage the long-term sustainability of your relationship and walk away while you still can with much less pain and cost than further down the road. In pre-commitment you are in an exclusive relationship that is not yet committed. This gives you an opportunity to identify whether this relationship meets your requirements and needs for a successful long-term relationship before you make a commitment. Using the pre-commitment stage to make conscious long-term choices makes good sense. PAIN PREVENTION Even if you experience the pain of breaking up in the pre-commitment stage, this prevents you from experiencing even greater pain down the road. Making the most conscious choice possible before making a commitment is, in our opinion, a pain-prevention gift you can give to yourself. As difficult as it is to make the choice to end a relationship, you will save yourself the devastation you will surely experience at the end of a mini-marriage or a divorce, especially where children are involved. If you are in a relationship that is not yet committed and are asking the question Is this the right relationship for me? I encourage you to make a long-term relationship choice that will result in the life and relationship that you really want before you make a commitment. We must acknowledge the possibility that your current relationship is not The One. Therefore, I suggest you seek to gain clarity about what you really want and need in a relationship and whether or not your current relationship will result in living the life you love with the love of your life. What You Should Know About Skin Care After 40!

By Claudia Budu Ph.D. Skin aging is a result of programmed events, which are represented by modifications at the cellular and molecular level. Major external and internal changes affect tremendously the aging process. One of the major external factors is sun exposure. UV rays can irreversibly induced wrinkles and skin damage. A change in hormonal balance is one of the major internal factors. Due to menopausal hormonal changes, womens skin looses its elasticity and firmness becoming wrinkled. There are also changes in the skins barrier function, sebum (a mixture of waxes, free cholesterol, free fatty acids and other lipids) production and facial contour. In this particular period of life a special skin care routine has to be developed to keep the skin protected and well moisturized. Sunscreen moisturizer creams are highly recommended at this stage to keep the skin protected. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are natural anti-oxidants with great sunscreen capabilities. Vitamin C has an important role in the elimination of free radicals from the skin, while vitamin E protects against free radicals. Moisturizers humectants are also of great importance in keeping the skin hydrated and smooth. Important natural humectants are: glycerin, honey, gelatin, some vitamins and proteins. Aged skin is fragile, dry, and sensitive. Therefore, mild cleanser and no astringent skin care products should be used. You should be very careful in using chemical peelings especially those using trichloracetic acid or phenol, which are very strong and require long time healing. In addition, UV rays can damage irreversible your new skin layers. Special care should be taken in the selection of light and heavy foundation make-up. Unfortunately, thicker facial foundation, which can cover the skins color abnormalities, only accentuates the deep wrinkles. Sometimes, avoiding heavy foundation makes you look younger and healthier. Several rejuvenating products are now available on the market. Among the rejuvenating products, creams containing hormones (progesterone and estrogen) are widely used. The progesterone and estrogen creams can decrease wrinkles, increase the sebum synthesis and improve skin elasticity. It is important to know that topical progesterone and estrogen are quickly absorbed and transported into the circulatory system. Concern may arise in using synthetic hormone creams, since the surplus remains in the system for up to two weeks and can trigger different ailments, such as cancer. Unlike synthetic hormones, plant hormones (phyto-hormones) are metabolized and easily eliminated from the body. They mimic the effect of human hormones and are similar with hormone therapy. Collagen creams are also available on the market as rejuvenating products. The collagen is supposed to nourish the skin and reverse the signs of aging. But the collagen molecule is too large to be adsorbed into the skin. Thus, what do you possibly feel onto the skin is the effect of other ingredients from the same formulation. You can try injections with collagen instead, which are efficient to soften wrinkles. However, the effect last between 3-12 months and after that you have to repeat the procedure. You might also develop allergies related to different types of collagen. Extreme rejuvenation therapies are also available. Dermabrasion, is a type of plastic surgery that is meant to refinish your skin by replacing the abraded skin with new collagen and epidermis. However, Dermabrasion requires undergoing major surgery and in every major surgery there are risks involved. There is also a possibility of scaring infection and permanent change in the skins pigmentation. Microdermabrasion involves blasting the surface of the skin with a mist of crystals under pressure to remove dead and damaged layers of skin. Using this procedure the skin becomes smoother and less wrinkled. The procedure should be repeated every 2-4 weeks, sometimes combined with a chemical peeling. Persons with skin ailments, such as rosacea, are not recommended to use this extreme rejuvenation procedure. And of course persons with diabetes should not attempt to use any of these extreme rejuvenation procedures. The skin healing may never be achieved. In conclusion: You cannot reverse the aging process but you can delay it by proper skin care, which does not have to be extreme. You have to know that if you start an extreme rejuvenation procedure you have to stick with it for the reminder of your life, which sometimes is not a convenient alternative. Natural ways of delaying the aging process, with a proper skin balance of valuable micronutrients and natural hormones, are a long lasting and healthier alternative. How Not To Eat Too Much At Home

By Rebekah N If you have your I’ll-eat-anything-anytime appetite issues sorted out, it’s good to start buying or making tasty treats to have around. That doesn’t have to mean muffins, cookies, cakes, etc. And it most definitely does not mean processed, junky foods like the stuff from the “bakery” at the grocery store. A tasty treat can be anything you previously banned because it had proven a problem food for you. For me, that’s most snacks, and high-glycemic ones in particular (a Protein Type’s death sentence). That includes baked goods, of course, but also organic chips and crackers, dates (oh, nature’s candy! that caramel-y taste!), whole-grain bread, and even certain fruits (for Protein Types and some Mixed Types). Carb Types will have their own vices: steaks, cream sauces, rich desserts, or whatever they’ve grown to enjoy that wreaks havoc on their consitutional type. I’ve developed a Fit Foodie Idea that’s working out tremendously well. So well that, despite being a lifelong all-day-snacker, I’ve snacked very little in the past month (and have shed a couple pounds, to boot). Fit Foodie Idea #47: Keep What You Really Like In Your Home, But Not What You Love There are foods you love so much that you’d be happy to devour it all in an afternoon or two… and… there are foods that you really enjoy and serve their purpose, but which don’t compel you to overeat. There are certain foods that don’t tempt you to overeat, *most of the time*, but in the event of an overeating urge, you might be tempted to devour in one sitting. Those don’t make the cut. The litmus test is: Ask yourself, “Would I eat a whole bunch of this thing if I was on an overeating spree?” If you answer yes, then hold out for a goal-supporting alternative. A few examples… 1. Bread - Before I learned about Metabolic Typing, I ate plenty of bread. Plain bread. Because “butter was bad”. And bread was cheap, anyway. I went for organic, locally-made whole grain bread from the health food store. But my constitutional type wasn’t happy with it, and it triggered me to overeat. So I’d eat a ton o’ organic whole grain bread from the health food store, plain, one slice after the other. First of all, I’ve gotten smarter: I don’t eat bread or any other grain by itself anymore. Second, I discovered that certain types of bread don’t pass the Idea #47 litmus test. So I don’t keep those breads around, most of the time. My substitution is Alvarado St. Bakery Sprouted Sourdough Bread or Ezekiel 7-Grain Sprouted Bread. They’re tasty, and they do the trick for an egg sandwich, grilled cheese, or whatever I may want to use them for. But there’s something about sprouted bread that doesn’t make it an appetizing overeating target. 2. Chocolate - I do love chocolate, though the sweet teeth I always thought I had has dramatically lessened. Sugar is an addiction that fades with avoidance. But give me a cup of good decaf tea and a little dark chocolate after dinner, curled up on the couch in front of a good movie… and I’m a happy girl. Ritter Sport Marzipan is one of my favorites. I’ve discovered that I can have a bar around for a month or two and not think anything of it, nibbling a square every now and then. But if I do get into an overeating mood, that’s the first thing to go. All of it. So, in light of my own best interest, no more Ritter Sports at home for now. But my vice doesn’t carry over into plain dark chocolate. The more bittersweet, the better. Look for bars with a high cocoa content (at least 70%). To the untrained palate (read: The Hershey’s-eating one), real dark chocolate will taste… well, dark. And a little bitter. (Many people’s taste buds are so desensitized from over-flavored processed foods that a normal amount of sweetness (like that in dark chocolate or fruit) tastes bland. This gets corrected with time.) Bottom line: I can happily enjoy a square of extra dark chocolate every now and then… and… I’m not tempted to gorge myself on a whole bar when in a too-snacky mood. I have a “dark chocolate stash” in my pantry that’s been around for months. That’s saying something. Green & Black’s makes a good organic bar; Lindt’s is also a favorite. 3. Chips & Crackers - I used to eat some kind of organic chips with fresh guacamole and Greek yogurt every day, but alas… my pants stopped fitting as well as they should. I was eating way too many chips every day, and they were often the first to go when my defenses were down. First, I found an alternative, higher-protein way to dip my guac & yogurt: either a high-protein veggie burger patty or chicken pieces. Sayonara, daily chip fix. And I started buying these little flat bread crackers from Fresh Market. They’re good to have around for eating with cheese and hummus as a little appetizer, or the occasional guacamole dipping. They’re tasty and satisfying, but not phenomenal. They’re no sour cream and chive bistro chips, that’s for sure. And good thing — because they hang around considerably longer than those darn bistro chips ever did. I’m still experimenting with what works and what doesn’t. In other words, what I eat half the container of immediately and what I forget is there for days on end. Experimenting is OK — I don’t think it ever stops, as the Fit Foodie lifestyle is a journey with the only definite end being death — but be honest with yourself. If you KNOW something is a weak spot for you, just say no. It’s not called “deprivation” — it’s called “being kind to yourself”. Save the stuff you LOVE-love for special days and evenings at home, cooking for family and friends, and try not to make enough for more than a day’s leftovers. Your most indulgent experiences are often best kept in restaurants and cafes where a single serving can be had (or a huge one split in half or quarters). Enjoy that organic brownie from the Whole Foods bakery — not from the family-sized pan calling your name at home. Be Happy…Be Knitting!

By Alice Seidel Life is good. We need to always remember that. Do something worthwhile. Learn to knit. Of course, when learning to knit, one of the first things you need to figure out is how to hold the needles. Knitters, no matter where they live, all knit in the same fashion. The only difference is how you hold the yarn, and in what hand. There are two basic ways in which to knit. One is the English (or American) way, and the other is the Continental way. To begin knitting in the English method, hold the right needle as you would a pencil. The left needle gets held between your left thumb and index finger so as to control the stitches. Some knitters like to knit close to the tip of the needle, while others prefer the safety of keeping the stitches further back on the needles. Either way is fine. In fact, some projects are easier to work close to the tip than others. You will find this out with the more patterns you knit. Your preference, your control, is what works for you! That’s the beauty of knitting; finding your own way. A little bit like life. Keep in mind the word “loose” at all times, when casting on. It really does help. And you do want that foundation row to be pliable enough to work with. When you start to knit, hold the needles lightly, and don’t let the stitches become too cramped or tight. If you are new to knitting, this will probably happen. Just unravel, and start again. Knitting should flow easily. Oh yes, there are those chunky, bulky yarns that are difficult to work with, so they will require greater strength from you as you progress, but that is normal to that particular yarn. Nothing should be so tight as to be impossible to work off the needle. If that happens, just go back and try again. And again. And, maybe, even again. As you progress, remember to control your yarn and stitches with your right index finger. Or you may use several fingers for control. This is relevant to keeping all stitches on the needle. Especially as you learn to include stitches beyond “knit and purl”, such as “yo” or “k2tog” or increasing. You don’t want to start dropping stitches or losing them from row to row. You know the deal; you cast on 43 stitches and by the sixth row you have maybe 39, so where did the other four stitches go? Remember, there is no one method that is 100% correct; if something works for you, then stick with that. Be mindful when making stitches; keep a steady hand on your needles, but don’t grip them so tightly that you can’t knit a stitch. Relax! It’s only yarn. Knitting should become confortable to you, and in the beginning, it won’t feel that way. That’s normal, too. Only with lots of practice will you begin to form your own unique approach to knitting! When you attain that, knitting will be so easy to do, and ideas will pop into your head all the time, ideas that you can transfer to your knitting needles for creations like no other! For you will have found a gift, a gift which you can bring to the world! You see, in the yarn we knit is the invisible thread which weaves us all… one to another. Planning Your Wedding - This Is Not A Good Start For A Happy Marriage

By Kacy Carr Why is it when planning your wedding - you will notice most wedding arrangements involved are nearly always directed towards the brides needs. Some women tend to forget that there is a bridegroom who needs looking after i.e. wanting to look his best (handsome) on the same day as the bride is to look her prettiest. Well guys when your wedding plans are in motion - I am afraid it is the bride that comes first in most cases, however - you fellas need to look on the bright side because, when the love of your life stands along side you at the altar dressed all in white or ivory and her sparkling tiara holds her wedding veil in place, it is then you will realize when planning your wedding took place, your wife-to-be made every effort to make this day special for you - just by looking radiantly beautiful. When planning your wedding it is best for the couple to be together when finalizing any decisions on who is to attend the marriage service (ceremony) i.e. guest list, or where the reception is to be held or where the honeymoon destination will be. It makes sense to see eye to eye on specific matters on particular events so as not to argue before the marriage vows are pledged. It is not a good start to a happy marriage (relationship) should you and your future husband - disagree on matters when planning your wedding. Careful planning right down to the last little detail will entail applying some common sense on to your wedding-to-do-list. Wisdom also prevails at a time like this “Learn by others mistakes” for example not to go over your budget. Spending more than what you can afford can be disastrous. Planning well ahead of time will and can surely make your wedding day an extra special occasion. Cost effective weddings can be just as grand as one you had paid through the nose for. Take the bridal gown a very costly wedding accessory of which can set you back hundreds of pounds even reaching a thousand and over - of which you only get to wear once, so bear this in mind and consider buying a second hand wedding dress. A used bridal gown will have only been worn once - so you could say the dress is as good as new. When planning your wedding, and counting the pennies is a top priority then down size on how many tiers of wedding cake is to sit as a centre piece on the wedding breakfast table. Wedding cakes are baked with an assortment of ingredients - rich in taste and texture, but not to every ones taste or liking, so therefore to please all the wedding guests and your pocket - why not have a sponge cake decorated in piped cream and edible tiny rose buds. By doing this you will have filled the bellies of all as well as your pocket. The savings from not having a caked baked with mixed fruit i.e. orange/lemon peel, marzipan etc can be put to better use. Another money saving idea in getting you to the church on time is to consider swapping the vintage Rolls Royce to a smaller vehicle adorned with ribbons. Remember - once the bride lifts up her gown above the ankle displaying her leg and the neat fitting brocade wedding slipper - all eyes will be on her and not the transport she arrived in. The bridal bouquet is an important accessory of which you will have had on you`re to do list when planning your wedding but however this also can set you back a few bob. Why not create your own; a hand held bunch of fresh spring flowers or summer roses is very attractive. Hold a clutch bag decorated in bloom buds or hold a bible. When planning your wedding remember that common sense will have you jetting off into the sunshine on honeymoon to the destination of your dreams with the extra pennies you saved. Unsecured Loans are Popular Among All People

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Carry]John Carry Whenever you start planning to take out a loan, you will find lot of options. But you have to decide according to your circumstances. If you need the loan urgently and you have nothing to offer as security against the loan, unsecured loans will be ideal for you. Unsecured loans are disbursed instantly. So, you do not have to wait for your loan approval. Suppose you want to start a small business but you are not sure that it will be successful. If you have a family with young children it would be very risky to secure your property against the loan. In such a case unsecured loans may be safer for you and for your family. It is true that getting approval of unsecured loan is difficult. But if you have spotless credit history, you should not hesitate to apply for unsecured loans. Generally unsecured loans are available for anyone with a stable income and decent credit history. The rate of interest will be slightly higher though as compared to secured loans. But the major advantage is that your property is not at risk. Most [http://www.online-unsecured-loans.co.uk/unsecured-loan.html ]unsecured loans are available on variable annual percentage rate. It means the interest rates will fluctuate to reflect changes in the base rate as set by Bank of England. However, some lending institutions are offering loans on fixed interest rates. Fixed interest rates are generally higher than the variable interest rates but it will protect you from future increase in the standard APR rate across unsecured loan payment period. Moreover, unsecured loans are not only popular among tenants and students, but many homeowners who do not want to offer their property as collateral and are opting for unsecured loans. Weight Loss Surgery: Successful Patients Embrace Four Stages of Growth

By Kaye Bailey Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) is often viewed as a quick fix for morbid obesity. One day a person is fat, the next they are not. While it may appear to onlookers that a gastric bypass patient is losing the weight without personal struggle or effort, this really isnt true. WLS patients must follow four rules for success and they experience four phases of growth following surgery. The four rules for successful weight loss and long-term weight maintenance are: Eat protein first; No snacking, Drink lots of water and Exercise daily. Adherence to these rules moves the patient smoothly through the four stages of bariatric growth which I define as: Conception, Infancy, Adolescence and Maturity. Conception begins when patients consider surgery as a treatment for morbid obesity. It could be prompted by a life threatening illness such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol, asthma, heartburn or sleep apnea. Or perhaps lifestyle prompts it a person may lack the energy to play with their children or pursue the activities they love. Maybe self-esteem is so low because of obesity that a drastic measure surgery is needed to restore a sense of self-worth. Conception is followed by birth, an event left entirely to a carefully selected surgeon and staff of healthcare professionals. The surgeon partitions off most of the stomach creating a pocket or pouch that will hold one ounce of food. In most gastric bypass surgeries the digestive system is re-routed to bypass the intestine and shortcut to the bowel. This prevents too many calories from being absorbed and stored by the body in the form of fat. The patient wakes from the surgery a bariatric infant. Infancy On the second day of my WLS infancy my surgeon stood at my hospital bedside and showed me a cup, the size in which sacramental communion is offered and he said This is the size of your stomach now. Just like bringing a newborn home from the hospital the bariatric patient brings home a tiny newborn tummy that has all kinds of requirements and restrictions. This new tiny tummy is completely foreign to the behaviors and habits that caused obesity. There is not one single thing an obese person has done in the past that they can continue doing. Patients who strictly follow the four rules quickly become acquainted with their new tiny tummy. This is the time of rapid weight loss. For the first time most morbidly obese patients are consistently losing lots of weight, something they have never experienced before. Infancy for most bariatric patients lasts from nine to 18 months. Similar to parents of a firstborn child who focus completely on their new baby, during bariatric infancy patients completely focus on their new tiny tummy. Then one day, without fanfare, they wake up and rediscover themselves. They enter adolescence. Adolescence Adolescence is the stage when patients test the system. Many patients dont dump, vomit, snack or eat the forbidden foods until they reach adolescence. But once they approach or reach target weight a mental bad boy shows up in a shiny black corvette saying take a ride on the wild side. So a patient jumps in the bad boys fast ride and speeds down a dangerous road. They break the rules! Perhaps they eat sugar which results in a blood sugar imbalance called dumping or they may stuff themselves with starchy carbs causing vomiting. In the worst case, a patient returns to snacking, a little treat of hard candy here and a handful of popcorn there. Mark my words, nothing stops-short weight loss or maintenance more quickly than a little bit of rule breaking. But like any teenager, we all have to learn it on our own. The good news: the duration of adolescence is up to the patient! A patient only hurts themselves when they break the rules. Successful WLS patients commit to themselves early to be in control of their own gastric bypass growth cycle. However, some WLS patients get stuck in adolescence. Ive heard many say, Oh, I can eat anything I want, just not much of it. Dont believe it for a minute. They arent saying how often they vomit, or dump or how they never quite achieved their weight loss goal. Weight loss patients who eat anything they want are abusing their tool and stuck in perpetual adolescence. Maturity At maturity a patient understands the gastric bypass system and is living the life they dreamed. They have achieved desired weight loss and are maintaining a healthy weight. A diligent patient can enjoy this phase for the rest of their life. I believe WLS maturity is reached when patients understand one word: respect. Respect for the tiny tummy, respect for the science of the body, and respect for oneself. Sure, we all experience an occasional lapse of judgment; that old lover of ours food - is flaunting temptations every single day. But the gastric bypass patient is a brave and powerful person. Successful patients build on infant and teenage experiences and become an adult embracing all the good things gastric bypass has facilitated. The battle against obesity isnt easy; patients will fight old habits for the rest of their life. Gastric bypass is a tool, a weapon in the battle against obesity, but it is the patient who wins the war.
