How Not To Eat Too Much At Home

By Rebekah N If you have your I’ll-eat-anything-anytime appetite issues sorted out, it’s good to start buying or making tasty treats to have around. That doesn’t have to mean muffins, cookies, cakes, etc. And it most definitely does not mean processed, junky foods like the stuff from the “bakery” at the grocery store. A tasty treat can be anything you previously banned because it had proven a problem food for you. For me, that’s most snacks, and high-glycemic ones in particular (a Protein Type’s death sentence). That includes baked goods, of course, but also organic chips and crackers, dates (oh, nature’s candy! that caramel-y taste!), whole-grain bread, and even certain fruits (for Protein Types and some Mixed Types). Carb Types will have their own vices: steaks, cream sauces, rich desserts, or whatever they’ve grown to enjoy that wreaks havoc on their consitutional type. I’ve developed a Fit Foodie Idea that’s working out tremendously well. So well that, despite being a lifelong all-day-snacker, I’ve snacked very little in the past month (and have shed a couple pounds, to boot). Fit Foodie Idea #47: Keep What You Really Like In Your Home, But Not What You Love There are foods you love so much that you’d be happy to devour it all in an afternoon or two… and… there are foods that you really enjoy and serve their purpose, but which don’t compel you to overeat. There are certain foods that don’t tempt you to overeat, *most of the time*, but in the event of an overeating urge, you might be tempted to devour in one sitting. Those don’t make the cut. The litmus test is: Ask yourself, “Would I eat a whole bunch of this thing if I was on an overeating spree?” If you answer yes, then hold out for a goal-supporting alternative. A few examples… 1. Bread - Before I learned about Metabolic Typing, I ate plenty of bread. Plain bread. Because “butter was bad”. And bread was cheap, anyway. I went for organic, locally-made whole grain bread from the health food store. But my constitutional type wasn’t happy with it, and it triggered me to overeat. So I’d eat a ton o’ organic whole grain bread from the health food store, plain, one slice after the other. First of all, I’ve gotten smarter: I don’t eat bread or any other grain by itself anymore. Second, I discovered that certain types of bread don’t pass the Idea #47 litmus test. So I don’t keep those breads around, most of the time. My substitution is Alvarado St. Bakery Sprouted Sourdough Bread or Ezekiel 7-Grain Sprouted Bread. They’re tasty, and they do the trick for an egg sandwich, grilled cheese, or whatever I may want to use them for. But there’s something about sprouted bread that doesn’t make it an appetizing overeating target. 2. Chocolate - I do love chocolate, though the sweet teeth I always thought I had has dramatically lessened. Sugar is an addiction that fades with avoidance. But give me a cup of good decaf tea and a little dark chocolate after dinner, curled up on the couch in front of a good movie… and I’m a happy girl. Ritter Sport Marzipan is one of my favorites. I’ve discovered that I can have a bar around for a month or two and not think anything of it, nibbling a square every now and then. But if I do get into an overeating mood, that’s the first thing to go. All of it. So, in light of my own best interest, no more Ritter Sports at home for now. But my vice doesn’t carry over into plain dark chocolate. The more bittersweet, the better. Look for bars with a high cocoa content (at least 70%). To the untrained palate (read: The Hershey’s-eating one), real dark chocolate will taste… well, dark. And a little bitter. (Many people’s taste buds are so desensitized from over-flavored processed foods that a normal amount of sweetness (like that in dark chocolate or fruit) tastes bland. This gets corrected with time.) Bottom line: I can happily enjoy a square of extra dark chocolate every now and then… and… I’m not tempted to gorge myself on a whole bar when in a too-snacky mood. I have a “dark chocolate stash” in my pantry that’s been around for months. That’s saying something. Green & Black’s makes a good organic bar; Lindt’s is also a favorite. 3. Chips & Crackers - I used to eat some kind of organic chips with fresh guacamole and Greek yogurt every day, but alas… my pants stopped fitting as well as they should. I was eating way too many chips every day, and they were often the first to go when my defenses were down. First, I found an alternative, higher-protein way to dip my guac & yogurt: either a high-protein veggie burger patty or chicken pieces. Sayonara, daily chip fix. And I started buying these little flat bread crackers from Fresh Market. They’re good to have around for eating with cheese and hummus as a little appetizer, or the occasional guacamole dipping. They’re tasty and satisfying, but not phenomenal. They’re no sour cream and chive bistro chips, that’s for sure. And good thing — because they hang around considerably longer than those darn bistro chips ever did. I’m still experimenting with what works and what doesn’t. In other words, what I eat half the container of immediately and what I forget is there for days on end. Experimenting is OK — I don’t think it ever stops, as the Fit Foodie lifestyle is a journey with the only definite end being death — but be honest with yourself. If you KNOW something is a weak spot for you, just say no. It’s not called “deprivation” — it’s called “being kind to yourself”. Save the stuff you LOVE-love for special days and evenings at home, cooking for family and friends, and try not to make enough for more than a day’s leftovers. Your most indulgent experiences are often best kept in restaurants and cafes where a single serving can be had (or a huge one split in half or quarters). Enjoy that organic brownie from the Whole Foods bakery — not from the family-sized pan calling your name at home. Be Happy…Be Knitting!

By Alice Seidel Life is good. We need to always remember that. Do something worthwhile. Learn to knit. Of course, when learning to knit, one of the first things you need to figure out is how to hold the needles. Knitters, no matter where they live, all knit in the same fashion. The only difference is how you hold the yarn, and in what hand. There are two basic ways in which to knit. One is the English (or American) way, and the other is the Continental way. To begin knitting in the English method, hold the right needle as you would a pencil. The left needle gets held between your left thumb and index finger so as to control the stitches. Some knitters like to knit close to the tip of the needle, while others prefer the safety of keeping the stitches further back on the needles. Either way is fine. In fact, some projects are easier to work close to the tip than others. You will find this out with the more patterns you knit. Your preference, your control, is what works for you! That’s the beauty of knitting; finding your own way. A little bit like life. Keep in mind the word “loose” at all times, when casting on. It really does help. And you do want that foundation row to be pliable enough to work with. When you start to knit, hold the needles lightly, and don’t let the stitches become too cramped or tight. If you are new to knitting, this will probably happen. Just unravel, and start again. Knitting should flow easily. Oh yes, there are those chunky, bulky yarns that are difficult to work with, so they will require greater strength from you as you progress, but that is normal to that particular yarn. Nothing should be so tight as to be impossible to work off the needle. If that happens, just go back and try again. And again. And, maybe, even again. As you progress, remember to control your yarn and stitches with your right index finger. Or you may use several fingers for control. This is relevant to keeping all stitches on the needle. Especially as you learn to include stitches beyond “knit and purl”, such as “yo” or “k2tog” or increasing. You don’t want to start dropping stitches or losing them from row to row. You know the deal; you cast on 43 stitches and by the sixth row you have maybe 39, so where did the other four stitches go? Remember, there is no one method that is 100% correct; if something works for you, then stick with that. Be mindful when making stitches; keep a steady hand on your needles, but don’t grip them so tightly that you can’t knit a stitch. Relax! It’s only yarn. Knitting should become confortable to you, and in the beginning, it won’t feel that way. That’s normal, too. Only with lots of practice will you begin to form your own unique approach to knitting! When you attain that, knitting will be so easy to do, and ideas will pop into your head all the time, ideas that you can transfer to your knitting needles for creations like no other! For you will have found a gift, a gift which you can bring to the world! You see, in the yarn we knit is the invisible thread which weaves us all… one to another. Planning Your Wedding - This Is Not A Good Start For A Happy Marriage

By Kacy Carr Why is it when planning your wedding - you will notice most wedding arrangements involved are nearly always directed towards the brides needs. Some women tend to forget that there is a bridegroom who needs looking after i.e. wanting to look his best (handsome) on the same day as the bride is to look her prettiest. Well guys when your wedding plans are in motion - I am afraid it is the bride that comes first in most cases, however - you fellas need to look on the bright side because, when the love of your life stands along side you at the altar dressed all in white or ivory and her sparkling tiara holds her wedding veil in place, it is then you will realize when planning your wedding took place, your wife-to-be made every effort to make this day special for you - just by looking radiantly beautiful. When planning your wedding it is best for the couple to be together when finalizing any decisions on who is to attend the marriage service (ceremony) i.e. guest list, or where the reception is to be held or where the honeymoon destination will be. It makes sense to see eye to eye on specific matters on particular events so as not to argue before the marriage vows are pledged. It is not a good start to a happy marriage (relationship) should you and your future husband - disagree on matters when planning your wedding. Careful planning right down to the last little detail will entail applying some common sense on to your wedding-to-do-list. Wisdom also prevails at a time like this “Learn by others mistakes” for example not to go over your budget. Spending more than what you can afford can be disastrous. Planning well ahead of time will and can surely make your wedding day an extra special occasion. Cost effective weddings can be just as grand as one you had paid through the nose for. Take the bridal gown a very costly wedding accessory of which can set you back hundreds of pounds even reaching a thousand and over - of which you only get to wear once, so bear this in mind and consider buying a second hand wedding dress. A used bridal gown will have only been worn once - so you could say the dress is as good as new. When planning your wedding, and counting the pennies is a top priority then down size on how many tiers of wedding cake is to sit as a centre piece on the wedding breakfast table. Wedding cakes are baked with an assortment of ingredients - rich in taste and texture, but not to every ones taste or liking, so therefore to please all the wedding guests and your pocket - why not have a sponge cake decorated in piped cream and edible tiny rose buds. By doing this you will have filled the bellies of all as well as your pocket. The savings from not having a caked baked with mixed fruit i.e. orange/lemon peel, marzipan etc can be put to better use. Another money saving idea in getting you to the church on time is to consider swapping the vintage Rolls Royce to a smaller vehicle adorned with ribbons. Remember - once the bride lifts up her gown above the ankle displaying her leg and the neat fitting brocade wedding slipper - all eyes will be on her and not the transport she arrived in. The bridal bouquet is an important accessory of which you will have had on you`re to do list when planning your wedding but however this also can set you back a few bob. Why not create your own; a hand held bunch of fresh spring flowers or summer roses is very attractive. Hold a clutch bag decorated in bloom buds or hold a bible. When planning your wedding remember that common sense will have you jetting off into the sunshine on honeymoon to the destination of your dreams with the extra pennies you saved. Unsecured Loans are Popular Among All People

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Carry]John Carry Whenever you start planning to take out a loan, you will find lot of options. But you have to decide according to your circumstances. If you need the loan urgently and you have nothing to offer as security against the loan, unsecured loans will be ideal for you. Unsecured loans are disbursed instantly. So, you do not have to wait for your loan approval. Suppose you want to start a small business but you are not sure that it will be successful. If you have a family with young children it would be very risky to secure your property against the loan. In such a case unsecured loans may be safer for you and for your family. It is true that getting approval of unsecured loan is difficult. But if you have spotless credit history, you should not hesitate to apply for unsecured loans. Generally unsecured loans are available for anyone with a stable income and decent credit history. The rate of interest will be slightly higher though as compared to secured loans. But the major advantage is that your property is not at risk. Most [http://www.online-unsecured-loans.co.uk/unsecured-loan.html ]unsecured loans are available on variable annual percentage rate. It means the interest rates will fluctuate to reflect changes in the base rate as set by Bank of England. However, some lending institutions are offering loans on fixed interest rates. Fixed interest rates are generally higher than the variable interest rates but it will protect you from future increase in the standard APR rate across unsecured loan payment period. Moreover, unsecured loans are not only popular among tenants and students, but many homeowners who do not want to offer their property as collateral and are opting for unsecured loans. Weight Loss Surgery: Successful Patients Embrace Four Stages of Growth

By Kaye Bailey Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) is often viewed as a quick fix for morbid obesity. One day a person is fat, the next they are not. While it may appear to onlookers that a gastric bypass patient is losing the weight without personal struggle or effort, this really isnt true. WLS patients must follow four rules for success and they experience four phases of growth following surgery. The four rules for successful weight loss and long-term weight maintenance are: Eat protein first; No snacking, Drink lots of water and Exercise daily. Adherence to these rules moves the patient smoothly through the four stages of bariatric growth which I define as: Conception, Infancy, Adolescence and Maturity. Conception begins when patients consider surgery as a treatment for morbid obesity. It could be prompted by a life threatening illness such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol, asthma, heartburn or sleep apnea. Or perhaps lifestyle prompts it a person may lack the energy to play with their children or pursue the activities they love. Maybe self-esteem is so low because of obesity that a drastic measure surgery is needed to restore a sense of self-worth. Conception is followed by birth, an event left entirely to a carefully selected surgeon and staff of healthcare professionals. The surgeon partitions off most of the stomach creating a pocket or pouch that will hold one ounce of food. In most gastric bypass surgeries the digestive system is re-routed to bypass the intestine and shortcut to the bowel. This prevents too many calories from being absorbed and stored by the body in the form of fat. The patient wakes from the surgery a bariatric infant. Infancy On the second day of my WLS infancy my surgeon stood at my hospital bedside and showed me a cup, the size in which sacramental communion is offered and he said This is the size of your stomach now. Just like bringing a newborn home from the hospital the bariatric patient brings home a tiny newborn tummy that has all kinds of requirements and restrictions. This new tiny tummy is completely foreign to the behaviors and habits that caused obesity. There is not one single thing an obese person has done in the past that they can continue doing. Patients who strictly follow the four rules quickly become acquainted with their new tiny tummy. This is the time of rapid weight loss. For the first time most morbidly obese patients are consistently losing lots of weight, something they have never experienced before. Infancy for most bariatric patients lasts from nine to 18 months. Similar to parents of a firstborn child who focus completely on their new baby, during bariatric infancy patients completely focus on their new tiny tummy. Then one day, without fanfare, they wake up and rediscover themselves. They enter adolescence. Adolescence Adolescence is the stage when patients test the system. Many patients dont dump, vomit, snack or eat the forbidden foods until they reach adolescence. But once they approach or reach target weight a mental bad boy shows up in a shiny black corvette saying take a ride on the wild side. So a patient jumps in the bad boys fast ride and speeds down a dangerous road. They break the rules! Perhaps they eat sugar which results in a blood sugar imbalance called dumping or they may stuff themselves with starchy carbs causing vomiting. In the worst case, a patient returns to snacking, a little treat of hard candy here and a handful of popcorn there. Mark my words, nothing stops-short weight loss or maintenance more quickly than a little bit of rule breaking. But like any teenager, we all have to learn it on our own. The good news: the duration of adolescence is up to the patient! A patient only hurts themselves when they break the rules. Successful WLS patients commit to themselves early to be in control of their own gastric bypass growth cycle. However, some WLS patients get stuck in adolescence. Ive heard many say, Oh, I can eat anything I want, just not much of it. Dont believe it for a minute. They arent saying how often they vomit, or dump or how they never quite achieved their weight loss goal. Weight loss patients who eat anything they want are abusing their tool and stuck in perpetual adolescence. Maturity At maturity a patient understands the gastric bypass system and is living the life they dreamed. They have achieved desired weight loss and are maintaining a healthy weight. A diligent patient can enjoy this phase for the rest of their life. I believe WLS maturity is reached when patients understand one word: respect. Respect for the tiny tummy, respect for the science of the body, and respect for oneself. Sure, we all experience an occasional lapse of judgment; that old lover of ours food - is flaunting temptations every single day. But the gastric bypass patient is a brave and powerful person. Successful patients build on infant and teenage experiences and become an adult embracing all the good things gastric bypass has facilitated. The battle against obesity isnt easy; patients will fight old habits for the rest of their life. Gastric bypass is a tool, a weapon in the battle against obesity, but it is the patient who wins the war. How Best to Begin Buying Antiques in Auction or from Dealers

By John Cohen About Becoming An Antique Collector Before buying anything; make a point of studying books and catalogues (even old ones) on your subject, then attend a few auctions, be sure to inspect your choice of antiques on the viewing days before the auction, always allow enough time to visit and explore the main dealers’ stock, both before and after any auction sales. This way you will gradually be able to assess what quality items are available and the prices being currently asked. Make a point of chatting to dealers, or well-known collectors, about what has happened after an auction. Not always, but sometimes one can gain quite a lot of useful guidance about particular pieces, what to look out for and importantly about the general feelings about any record breaking prices. After an auction it can be possible sometimes to find that a dealer might have a similar quality piece, or even a better one, for much less than has just been paid! A note of caution here, sometimes a really silly price is paid in the auction room, simply because two determined people badly wanted that piece. In such a case of course, that value has to be discounted to a certain extent. It is this sort of information that should be sought (in my earlier suggestion of chatting at the end of the auction). Buying Guidance The best advice for anyone tempted to collect any antiques would be, first, to study your choice of subject and attend auctions, meet and talk to the dealers, handle and see as many pieces as possible. Do not rush in to buy because unfortunately trying to collect, in any specialised antique area, it often takes many years to acquire the necessary expertise, without which, very costly mistakes can be made. Once you feel more confident you should then be prepared to commission a well-known specialist dealer to bid for you. You would have to expect to pay at least 10% (of the bid price) for this service. But this can be well worth paying, as you will not only benefit from his knowledge and guidance, you will also stop him bidding against you! Only another collector can fully appreciate that overpowering urge, that comes over one, on finding a treasure really wanted. It is the closest feeling to that of love at first sight. I have been told that ones pupils tend to enlarge, and this is one of the signs that dealers watch out for, and as collectors, of course, we always try desperately to camouflage our interest. Auctions Strange things certainly do happen at auction! If there is only one spectacular piece amongst some fairly good items, there is a good chance of picking up a bargain, both just before and just after, the really super piece. Before, the main buyers are often holding back hoping they can be in with a chance with their maximum bid, so they tend to stop bidding as high as they might have done in normal circumstances. Immediately after, because everyone is discussing what has just been paid, especially if a record price was reached, all this can be going on whilst another piece slips through and is sold. There are also items known as ’sleepers’ and often these are pieces that are sold at bargain prices, just because no one present required it, or for some reason it was overlooked. Attending a poor auction (this is one with only one or two good items in it, amongst a lot of junk) can be advantageous, if there is a fine example to be had. Quite a number of buyers feel they cannot afford the time in attending such a poor auction. Sadly this does not happen so much now. Sometimes too, but not often, a piece is wrongly described. Then one can, if lucky, really find a bargain. Once we bought a jade snuff bottle that is so remarkably well hollowed and such a flawless piece of stone, that it was in fact sold wrongly catalogued as glass! We had to buy it from a well-known dealer (preferring to pay him a good profit, rather than keep bidding it up against him) in the end it wasnt cheap but it is one of the finest we have ever seen! We no longer believe much in trying to find bargains, as we have found that the most expensive, but finest examples, over time, are often by far the best buys! We have worried about having paid too much on several occasions. They were very rare, superb examples, but still we worried. Yet these are now the treasures that have proved to be the most wonderful bargains of all! Beyond Value Lastly, there is one important factor that has not been mentioned, as it is so impossible to measure! That is the value of the pleasure one enjoys from participating, as a collector, in such a fascinating hobby as collecting antiques is hard to describe. You also meet such interesting people from all over the world, for there is an immediate bond amongst fellow collectors, except when met at the beginning of an auction! Then there is the intrigue of the hunt and the excitement at every new addition that only another collector can fully appreciate. Life is so enriched, I do believe that such hobbies are vital, and so many people who have hardly any outside interests, beyond their world of work, have no idea of just how much fun they are missing!
